How to get your kids to eat their meals

Use these practical tips to help your children eat well:

Shut out the noise

Put away all distractions that may take the child’s attention from the meal. Turn off that cartoon and electronic device

Sit to eat

Ensure kids have a designated spot at the dinning table and make sure they are comfortably seated during meals

Serve smaller portions

Do not compare the quantity an adult can eat to that of a child. More servings can be added as the child requests

Limit snacking

Discourage frequent snacking during the day to ensure that kids get more meals than snacks

Be timely

Don’t serve dinner too late or close to bedtime: this ensures your child is fully awake and involved in mealtime

Be realistic

Do not insist on non beneficial meal time rules.

A common example is insisting that the child eats up all the food before their meat or protein.

This can be discouraging and may eventually deprive the child of getting the protein their body really needs to grow

Be open minded

Keep an open mind and have an encouraging demeanor. A child may perceive a mother’s frown during feeding to mean the food is not tasty or worth a try.

Explore

Be willing to explore different types of food to find your child’s favorite. Try to make the identified favorite as balanced and colorful as possible by adding other food groups(especially vegetables)
